"The Wilmington Police Department is proud to recognize the Operation Safe Streets Unit as the Kiwanis Officers of the year 2015. The Unit was officially recognized last evening at an awards ceremony hosted by the Kiwanis Club at the Hotel DuPont. The Wilmington Safe Street Unit is a joint task force, working under the authority of the Governor for the State of Delaware. The unit is comprised of (4) Officers and (1) Sergeant from the Wilmington Police Department and (4) State of Delaware Adult Probation and parole Officers. The primary objective of the Safe Streets Unit is to reduce the recidivist rate of individuals who are committing violent crimes and who are currently on probation or parole. In addition, members of Operation Safe Streets also conduct traditional policing strategies as well as investigate criminal activity within and around the city of Wilmington. These nine law enforcement officers demonstrate dedication to the safety of the citizens of the City of Wilmington while working tirelessly, and the majority of time through the night –AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES to monitor and arrest the most violent individuals residing in our city. Their accumulated numbers of gun, drug, & money seizures arrests as well as curfew checks of high risk offenders (probation and parolees) are phenomenal. The knowledge, work ethic, teamwork and commitment in serving and protecting the City of Wilmington and it’s citizens displayed by Operation Safe Streets is the definition of PROFESSIONALISM.
