"On Thursday February 11, 2016 around 2:00 p.m., the Sussex County Drug Task Force and Sussex County Governor's Task Force (GTF) conducted a traffic stop on a gold Chevrolet Impala that was observed committing a traffic violation on Sussex Highway (US13) southbound near Concord Road. As the troopers approached the driver's side of the vehicle, Purnell Collins, 48 of Bridgeville, was contacted and refused to comply with directions to exit the vehicle. Collins then placed the car in drive and accelerated southbound at a high rate of speed, dragging a trooper a short distance down the road. Collins lost control of his vehicle near Oakels Road and ran off the west side of US13 where he struck a tree head-on. Once stopped, Collins exited the vehicle and began fleeing on foot. A trooper assigned to GTF with his K9 partner, "Kilo," were at the initial traffic stop and immediately responded to the crash scene where “Kilo” was released out of the cruiser upon Collins attempt to flee. “Kilo” was able to successfully apprehend Collins and troopers were able to place him in custody without further incident. Upon searching Collins, he was found to be in possession of 41.6 grams of cocaine along with 3.1 grams of crack cocaine. A probationary administrative search of Purnell Collins' residence in the 18000 block of Wesley Church Road was conducted by probation and parole officers assigned to the GTF as he is on Level 2 probation stemming from a 2003 conviction of Racketeering and Trafficking Cocaine charge. The search of the house revealed a 30-30 caliber rifle, .22 caliber pistol, .45 caliber ammunition, and over $2,300.00 in suspected drug proceeds. Collins is prohibited from being in possession of any weapons or ammunition due to his felony convictions. After being treated at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for the K9 bite wounds and other non-life-threatening injuries, Collins was transported back to Troop 4 in Georgetown where he was charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited, Possession with Intent to Deliver Cocaine, Disregarding a Police Officers Signal, Reckless Endangering 1st, Resisting Arrest, and two counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was arraigned at JP2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Center on $80,500.00 cash bond."-DSP Newsroom
