Sometimes what begins as a simple gesture of goodwill blossoms into something great. This has been the case for a winter coat drive organized by members of Lodge # 10. Termed "Operation ZiPP Up", the drive has been used over the last few years to assist members of our community who have endured the recent economic downturn. This year's drive, however, seemed to have a different feel than previous years. While in the past lodge members have looked in their closets for coats that have gone unworn, this year, they opened their minds (and in some cases their wallets) seeking alternative ways to help those in need.
Thanks to our members, 2011-12 was a resounding success. The total amount of items collected exceeded 400 items, including 279 coats, hats, gloves and other cold weather clothing. This is nearly the amount collected over the last two years combined! So many donations could not have collected without the hard work and personal involvement of our project coordinators. Additionally, Lodge # 10 wishes to thank the partnership and support received from Middletown Police Department, Dover Police Department and philanthropic organizations "Knitting to Nurture" group from the Wyoming United Methodist Church and The Good Samaritan Outreach Worker in Laurel.
This year, project coordinators in each county chose local humanitarian groups to benefit from Operation ZiPP Up (see the link below for a list of items and beneficiaries).
It’s difficult to fully express the positive impact of a simple gesture; donating one coat or one hat. In tough times, sadly, a warm coat may be a luxury some cannot afford. Fortunately, thanks to the generosity and community spirit of Lodge # 10 members, DOC Staff and their friends and families, those in need from our communities will have warm coats and clothing this winter.
